Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia is a type of word that sounds like the thing it is describing.

  1. Find three google images that illustrate this language feature.

      2. Visit three different websites to find a definition of this. Copy and paste them in and identify the one that explains it the best for your understanding.

Onomatopoeia is defined as a word, which imitates the natural sounds of a thing. It creates a sound effect that mimics the thing described, making the description more expressive and interesting.
I find that the Blue writing (the third one) makes the most sense to me because it uses words that I can understand and it is short not long like the other ones.


3. Match the following sentences to the onomatopoeia that describes them.

4. Put each of the above onomatopoeia into a descriptive sentence.
  • It was night time and I was getting the plates for dinner I took 4 then took just 1. It was only small but very heavy I was struggling to carry and then it just slipped SMASH the plate is broken.
  • “Mum it's my birthday it's my BIRTHDAY” Mum was just putting up the last balloon and think suddenly POP  the last birthday balloon popped.
  • “Dad can I go shooting with you I don't want to shoot just watch” “fine honey you can come but you will have to stay close to and listen you don't want to scare anything off” We were in the forest and we saw A deer I had to stay close to dad otherwise I could have gotten shot but luckily dad has a good aim and before I knew it BANG we had dinner sorted out.
  • The rugby was on and that means everyone comes over and on our street of someone comes over they bring food and I like crisps and they knew I love crisps so they bought some over. I got the packet opened it up and the smelled filled the room I got a crisp out of the packet and CRUNCH I had eaten the best most delicious crisp ever.
  • “ Hey Francesca, hey fan wake up it is 11.59pm we can make the midnight feast happen to come on I will turn the lights on” I walked over to the light switch and CLICK the room was full of brightness.
  • “Ok everyone into the car we will meet dad there remember he has to like it as well” we were on the way to the SPCA to chose a puppy. we got to the SPCA and there were so many animals Parrots, Dogs, Kittens and Cats there were so anymore as well. We walked past barking dogs quiet dogs and one dog that was very loud when we walked past him he would growl. “ GROWL” “ mum I don't want to get that one”
  • “ Ok everyone time to stop Everyone TWINKLE goes Mrs Houghton's little bell.


5. Find 3 more onomatopoeia and add them to this doc.

6. Choose one, cut out the letters from the magazine and glue onto an A4 piece of paper. Illustrate appropriately to really convey what the word represents.
